List A-Z
For iPod
The Animal Ingredients List A-Z for iPod is a handy, portable, quick reference for vegans on-the-go. Using the information provided by HappyCow.net, one can access the details of—and alternatives for—the many obvious, not so obvious, and downright hidden animal-sourced ingredients we encounter in our day-to-day lives… all on one's iPod*.
New in Version 2: One can additionally browse a list of E numbers—compiled by The Vegan Society—for possible animal-sourced additives within food products in the EU, New Zealand, and Australia.
- The Animal Ingredients List A-Z is easily installed by downloading a directory and moving it to the 'Notes' directory of your iPod
- The List does not programmatically alter your iPod in any way: it is simply a collection of documents organized for easy browsing
- The List occupies only a fraction of the space of a single song
Requirements
I do not have the resources to test every configuration, but the List should function on any iPod with a display as old as a 3rd Generation, including the mini and the nano, although...
Due to differences in the underlying technology, the List reportedly will not work with the iPhone nor the iPod Touch. (Although there is something in the works for you folks, so check back.)
The List needs about 1 Mb of free space on your iPod to copy into.

Click for iTunes 7 instructions »
First select your iPod in the left hand column of iTunes, as doing so will display your iPod's preferences. Under the tab named 'Summary', at the bottom, is an option to 'Enable disk use' – make sure this is checked. (If it wasn't checked, you might want to disconnect and reconnect your iPod after checking the box.)
Now your iPod should show up in the Finder or on the Desktop (Mac), or in My Computer (Windows). If you double-click that iPod icon, inside there should be a folder named 'Notes'. Drag the 'Animal Ingredients' folder you downloaded into that 'Notes' folder, and you should be good to go. «

Problems? Thoughts?
If you have any issues—any at all—please let me know. My only ambition was to share something that I have come to rely upon, and therefore I would love to work on making it reliable for everyone.
Also, if you have any additional information or suggestions, please let me know! This project is far from complete and could always use your help in crafting a better resource for all.

- The content of the A-Z List is from HappyCow.net, almost verbatim. I adjusted the text only to allow for quick scrolling to the 'Details' and the 'Alternatives', and I did condense some longer headings.
- The E numbers List was lifted directly from The Vegan Society. My gratitude goes out to Laura Synthesis for finding me an authoritative source for an E numbers list.
- The inspiration for this 'iPodded' version of the List came from reading Vegan Freak by Bob Torres and Jenna Torres.
- The idea for an 'iPod guide' came from westciv's Style Master podGuide.

* This resource should not be considered authoritative or all-encompassing. Some ingredients listed may be up for debate as to variations in origin, and some ingredients may have been unintentionally omitted due to incomplete sources or recent changes and/or developments in food processing practices. Although overall the list is quite reliable and really rather useful. ↩
